Sidebar madness

2005-11-04

Oh my, the web2.0 gives you so much to do. I just enhanced my sidebar (on the homepage only) with several services:

First the stumbleupon badge:
it’s a remix of the mystumble.php script by aufziehvogel. If you are a SU-user, want a blog-badge and know hopefully more about php than i do, go ahead and get this zip file

What it does? It just gets my SU-RSS-feed and displays the recent sites i reviewed on my stumbleupon. It links to the reviewed page, not to my SU-review of it, as the link is not provided in the feed. Maybe Geoff will hear me on that …

Next the flickr badge:
Just made it show four pictures instead of just one from my flickr, which leads to funny random combinations.

Then the tagcloud:
A service of TagCloud.com, which lets you aggregate feeds and put them out in a cloud. Perfect to monitor your watchlists from Technorati by one glance, or something else. In my case i aggregate some feeds that i produce like the stumbleupon feed (see above), my flickr feed (see above), my digg feed (see below), the feed from this blog of course, some technorati watchlists and even my msn egosearch, as no other (maybe better) search engine, provides feeds for search results at the moment. or I just don’t know about another one.

Note that the items of the tagcloud are not really tags folksonomized by someone or me. It just looks for common words in feeds and makes them tags. Which means i had to set up a huge stopwordlist of german words, techno-acronyms ans stuff i didnt want to show up. Why not give it to you as well … Wait a minute … Here it is, only useful for a german, i guess:

Last thing, the digg badge:
Same as the others it displays a feed. In this case it’s the feed of my recently dugg stories over at digg.

So this is now a bunch of javascript-badges that run when you load the home of this blog. And if one service is slow or down it fks the page quite up. I hope it wasn’t the case for you right now.

BTW: next badge i’ll include will be readio. Stay tuned.

  1. Kosmar:

update: my sidebar had some more changes: a last.fm recent playlist, a plazes badge, a button for my winksite and an odeo voice message button. i removed read.io for the moment, waiting for the final release of the service. well stay tuned.
